Fire Safety Tips

November 9, 2009

I know that I missed Fire Safety week- National Fire Prevention Week was October 4th- 10th.  But since it’s never too late to teach our children about fire safety I decided that this post was better than never.

As I’m sure you know, children learn best through play.  Sure we can tell them information but if we can set up a learning experience through toys or a game our children are going to remember what they learned. International Playthings has several different toys that are perfect to teaching children about fire safety. They have the Mighty World Fire Brigade which comes with 30 accessories. There is also the Mighty World Fire Chief and the Mighty World Mighty Fire Truck.

Here are some tips you can use when you’re talking to your children about fire safety.

Kid-Friendly Fire Safety Tips from the National Fire Sprinkler Association:
1. Never play with matches, candles, or lighters. Tell an adult immediately if you see these items lying out in a room.
2. Never cook alone.
3. Never stick anything into an electrical socket.
4. Never hang clothing or other items on a lamp, heater, or radiator.
5. Always tell an adult if you see smoke or fire in your house.
6. If you see fire, get out of the house quickly. Once you are outside, call 9-1-1 immediately.
7. Practice a fire escape plan with your parents several times per year.
8. When escaping fire, stay low to the ground.
9. There should be a smoke alarm on each level of your house. Can you find the smoke alarms in your home?
10. Remind your parents to check smoke alarms each month to make sure it is free of dust and that the battery is working.

If you’re looking for a fun way to teach your children about fire safety be sure to check out the toys at International Playthings.
